Biography
Yongjie Sha is a PhD student at the School of Information who works on health informatics and human-computer interaction under the supervision of Dr. Megan Threats. Yongjie is particularly interested in engaging marginalized communities in designing data-driven technologies that contribute to a more just future in health and healthcare in the age of AI.
Yongjie received her LLB in Social Work from the University of Science and Technology Beijing in 2016 and her MA in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago in 2018. Before joining the Health Justice Informatics Lab in 2023, she worked as a research assistant at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Project in China, where she engaged in community-based participatory research with gender and sexual minority populations in Guangzhou. She conducted mixed-method research to understand their sexual and mental health needs and developed technology-mediated interventions to improve HIV prevention outcomes. Her multidisciplinary background led her to become passionate about decentralizing and democratizing healthcare and AI to benefit disadvantaged communities.
